Blog Absence and New Work

2011 has been absolutely crazy so far! I can't believe I've neglected my blog this long. Even my tweeting has fallen on the short side (god forbid).

I have been quite busy getting the ball rolling in Toronto. I am now comfortably settled in one of my favourite cities, and it feels amazing. I've been in the works of rebranding my business and exploring new avenues. Very exciting things are coming in the near future.

I'm going to leave you with some photos I took of Structures from a few weeks ago. I went with them to London for a show they were playing with For Today, Stray From the Path and Texas In July. I had be waiting for so long to get a chance to see Stray from The Path, they definitely did not disappoint.

For those of you heading down to SXSW in Austin be sure to check out Structures at the Sumerian Records Showcase on Wednesday March 16 at Habana Bar. I wish I was heading down with them for SXSW!

Had a great time shooting my friend Shannon Cote's final collection for her fashion design program. This coat is pretty amazing. Made with a very soft kashmir fabric, made me want a coat made of the same material.

I've been making so many great friends on this tour, it's overwhelming. Hanging out every night and shooting the shit, playing beer pong, jamming and relaxing is the best part of tour. However, some days we get really spoiled, there will be a great fishing spot right beside the venue, and myself and some of the other fishing enthusiasts on tour will try our luck.

I've found myself fishing often with Ryan 'Legs' Leger of Every Time I Die and and Big Rev. Peyton from Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band. These guys are awesome dudes who love to fish and I really enjoy any time we get to go out fishing.

Our bus blew out a tire early Friday morning right before we were about to cross the border in Buffalo into Canada. The tire blew up right underneath where I sleep, I literally shot out of bed when it happened it was so loud, but the driver and the best of the people on the bus didn't hear a thing. Being the only one awake, I helped Nick, our driver, remove the excess rubber and lift the rear wheels so we could get to the repair shop.

July 4th was an off day for Warped Tour, but Emarosa along with a few other bands on the tour (Fight Fair, The Summer Set, VersaEmerge, The Cab and We The Kings) had a show booked in Memphis, Tennessee at the New Daisy Theater. The venue is right on Memphis' famous Beale Street, the birthplace of jazz, blues and rock n' roll. It was really awesome being on such a historically important street in terms of music history. I even got to partake in some of the best BBQ in the world. I couldn't have asked for a better way to spend my first July 4th in the US.

We had a couple of really rainy days in Texas, but none were as bad as Dallas. The front of house soundboard got too soaking wet and shorted out, cutting the set short by 3 songs. I can't believe how much water came from the sky in such a short period of time. Thanks a lot Hurricane Alex..

I flew down to Los Angeles on Monday to hang out for a bit before Warped Tour starts on Friday.

My good friend (and webmaster) Eric Nicholson and I are staying in a hotel by LAX. Eric has just moved to LA and we have spent the past few days looking for an apartment for him. This has been great because I've been able to see so many cool areas of Los Angeles. So far we have been down to Laguna, Newport Beach, Hermosa, Manhattan Beach, Hollywood, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and Venice.

Yesterday we spent the day at Laguna Beach and we met with with my friend Caley who I had classes with at Ryerson University, and her friend. We had the best spot on the beach, and I even saw a pod of dolphins swim by. Such a great day!

Went to a great show last night at Walkers in Saskatoon. Bane has been one of my favourite hardcore bands for as long as I can remember, it was a real treat to see them in a small venue like Walkers. Also it was my first time seeing Lowtalker (members of Misery Signals and Comeback Kid) and it was an awesome set.

R.I.P Devon Clifford 1979-2010

This is not a happy post, I woke up this morning to find out that You Say Party, We Say Die!, drummer Devon Clifford passed away last night. Devon was a major part of the Vancouver and Canadian music scene. I feel priviliged that I had the chance to see him play several times, he will be greatly missed.

Had a very busy week with TXBK, shooting them in the studio on Thursday, then playing at the Media Club on Saturday.

Some changes have been made at the TXBK camp. Chris is no longer in the band and Kai has taken over vocal duties, leaving Adam to be the sole guitarist. The show on Saturday was amazing, and I'm very excited to be a part of this new chapter of this band's life. I'll be hitting the road with them on a cross Canada tour this June, keep an eye out for dates posted soon!

Another Day In The Studio

Had two more shoots last night for my graduation project. Had some help from my friends (left to right) Colin, Jason and Christiana. It was a lot of fun and I am extremely satisfied with the results of the shoot. My graduation project will go online after the Emily Carr University graduation exhibition at the beginning of May.

p.s. Might I mention that my favourite piece of gear in my entire arsenal is this clip on book light, it's so handy in a dark studio or on location. Simple solutions to real problems, I love it.

Daryl and David are DJs on 90.5 CFCR in Saskatoon on the FM dial. They host a show called Swing Shift which they describe simply as "groovy".

Video Evidence: Some of the best

I decided to put together a small list of videos from some of the best shows I've ever been to. Some of my absolute favourite shows there is no video evidence of, but here are a bunch of great ones that I could find. In no particular order:

1.The Fullblast's last show ever at The Opera House, Toronto, ON, on July 30th, 2008. I was on tour with Living With Lions and A Wilhelm Scream and we did the two final Fullblast show's in London and Toronto on our way through Ontario. This show was absolutely amazing and if you couldn't be there, that's a shame.

2.Far From Ruin's last show at The Exchange, Regina, SK, on January 12, 2007. I remember driving down to Regina for this show the day after a terrible blizzard with two of my friends. We were flying down the frozen highway past piles of dead deer and wrecked semi trucks in the ditch the whole way. Far From Ruin was my favourite hardcore band growing up in Saskatchewan. I missed their reuinion show last year when I was home for the holidays and I totally regret it. Sucks that the video is an overdub but it was still one of the best shows ever.

3.A Wilhelm Scream at Mavericks in Ottawa, ON in August 2008. This is a great video of Brian and Nick killing it on stage left. I sat and watched Nick drum this whole set, pretty sure I didn't even take any pictures. His hands move SO fast.

4.The Holly Springs Disaster at The Reverb (Big Bop RIP) on March 6, 2008. This show was part of Canadian Music Week as Distort Entertainment's showcase. Also on the bill was Architects (UK), Johnny Truant (UK), A Textbook Tragedy and The End. This show was absolutely insane and it's too bad the video is pretty choppy. It's still worth the watch, and as a bonus there is some footage of my getting thrown around taking photos.

5.Lights in Vancouver, BC at the Commodore Ballroom on November 7, 2009. This is the most recent favourite. It was so, so good to see a good friend doing so well for herself. Make you feel all warm and tingly and stuff.

My apologies for the lack of updates over the holidays. I was spending some well needed time with my family back home in Saskatoon. I thought I would let everyone know about a show my friends Patrick and Lauryn put together that opened this past weekend. It is up for a month at Antisocial Skateshop at Main and 8th in Vancouver. I am showing a photograph of my father's that he took in the early 80's when he was in Europe on a hockey trip. This photo is one of the main reasons I began taking photographs. My Lonely Hearts Club Band

I've been working on an ongoing project since July with my close friends. We've been recording cover songs on my macbook in individual sessions. I ask my friends to choose any song they want and they are free to recreative however they like. The only stipulations are that they have to be recorded with my Macbook using the built in microphones, and all the songs are engineered in Garage Band.

Last night I photographed Blink 182 at GM Place in Vancouver for Alternative Press (www.altpress.com). I never thought in my entire life I'd get a chance to shoot these guys after their breakup in 2005. The first CD I ever purchased when I was in the 5th grade was Enema of the State, and it influenced me greatly growing up. It's safe to say if it wasn't for this band, my musical taste might not be at all the same.
